Director / NZSL Tutor
Hi! I’m Amber Shaw. I grew up in Hokianga, Far North. Previously I lived in Auckland for 11 years and have been in Wellington last 3 years. Now back in Auckland, I am keen to expand the business (NZSL4U) beyond Wellington.
I set up NZSL4U 3 years ago in a very small office in Wellington when I just moved down. So far, it has been an amazing but long and hardworking journey. I am excited to see where NZSL4U will go.
I have been teaching NZSL for last 6 years and became qualified NZSL tutor through Victoria University in 2016. I taught night classes at Wellington High School Adult Community Education for 3 years. I work closely with Capital Training based in Wellington and delivering classes at different levels through Adult Community Education (ACE) funding for Wellington and Auckland.
I have a dream to make sure that one day everyone is able to communicate using NZSL, and for the Deaf community to become an open space where NZSL is used by everybody. I currently work full-time for Deaf Aotearoa to provide services to Deaf community.
When I’m not working, I work with Coffee Educators delivering training to different areas in hospitality such as Garage Project, CoLab. The idea is to make NZSL accessible and focussed on customised training, catered to suited to each hospitality's preference. I have also provided specific NZSL training to Government Departments and the hospitality industry as well as private tuition. Beyond that, I enjoy drinking coffeeeeeeeee!
