Amber Shaw

Director / NZSL Tutor

Hi! I’m Amber Shaw. I grew up in Hokianga, Far North. Previously I lived in Auckland and have been in Wellington for 3 years. I have two beautiful Deaf Boys and became a qualified NZSL tutor through Victoria University.

I have been teaching NZSL was the last 6 years. I currently work with Wellington High School Adult Community Education and Capital Training in Wellington Region delivering night classes at different levels. During the day I work closely with Coffee Educators, delivering training to different areas in hospitality, making NZSL accessible and focusing on training suited to each groups needs. I have also provided specific NZSL training to Government Departments and Educational facilities as well as private tuition.

I set up NZSL4U last year and so far, it has been an amazing journey. My goal one day is for everyone to be able to communicate using NZSL, for my boys to grow up in a world where NZSL is used by everybody.

When I am not teaching you will find me drinking coffee around Wellington, - it definitely has the best coffee shops!

What people say about Amber

I signed up for NZSL classes and had Amber as my teacher. I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher or person to teach me. Amber is a lovely person in herself but also a patient teacher which is the key when learning anything. Amber has made learning NZSL a pleasure, I know all the students in our class enjoy every class we have.

Amber is a great teacher who delivers fun, interactive and supportive NZSL classes. I had a blast and am now able to use some NZSL in everyday life. Highly recommend!

I had absolutely no previous experience with NZSL and so really wasn’t too sure what to expect from this course.

It was fantastic and really great fun!. Amber was engaging, knowledgeable and supportive of each attendee. She was able to cater for all levels so that if you missed a session, it didn’t take too long to catch up.

I highly recommend Amber and would encourage anyone to attend this course.
